Italian director, set designer, and film director. Born in Florence, he studied architecture. From the 1940s to the 1950s, he studied under M. Antonioni, V. De Sica, and L. Visconti. Visconti recognized his talent as a set designer and commissioned him to work on the set for Visconti's production of Troilus and Cressida in 1949. He established himself as a stage director with his direction of Othello at the Stratford-on-Avon Shakespeare Festival in 1961 and E. Albee's production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

イタリアの演出家，舞台装置家，映画監督。フィレンツェに生まれ，建築を学ぶ。1940年代から50年代にかけて，M.アントニオーニ，V.デ･シーカ，L.ビスコンティに師事。ビスコンティは彼の舞台装置家としての才能を認め仕事を依頼，49年ビスコンティ演出《トロイラスとクレシダ》の装置で注目された。舞台の演出では61年ストラトフォード･オン･エーボンのシェークスピア祭における《オセロー》の演出，およびE.オールビーの《バージニア･ウルフなんか恐くない》の演出で地位を確固たるものにした。
