Gastric emptying test

Food eaten is stored in the stomach, mixed with gastric juice, turns into a porridge-like substance, and is sent through the pylorus to the duodenum. This is called gastric emptying, and its function is called gastric emptying function. Gastric emptying function tests are one of the tests used to examine gastric emptying function, i.e., the motility function of the stomach. There are several methods to measure gastric emptying function, including the barium contrast method, a method using a stomach tube, and a method using an isotope added to food, but the method using a drug that is not absorbed in the stomach but is rapidly absorbed in the intestine (the acetaminophen method) is simpler and more objective than other methods.

口から食べた物は胃で貯蔵され，胃液と混ぜられ粥（かゆ）状となり幽門を通り，十二指腸へと送られる。これを胃排出といい，その機能を胃排出能という。胃排出機能検査は胃排出能すなわち胃の運動機能をしらべる検査の一つである。胃排出能を測定するには，バリウム造影法，胃管を用いる法，食べ物にアイソトープを加える方法があるが，胃で吸収されず腸管吸収のすみやかな薬物を用いる方法(アセトアミノフェン法)は他の方法にくらべて，簡便で客観性にすぐれている。
