The origins of African-American literature date back to a few poems in the mid-18th century, but the first novel was William Wells Brown's Clotel, the President's Daughter (1853). In the 20th century, a small number of professional writers emerged, but in the 1920s, a vigorous literary movement called the Negro Renaissance (Harlem Renaissance) began, centered in Harlem, New York, and this momentum became the basis for the state of affairs after World War II.
