...The content that can be encompassed under the broad concept of black literature is broad and complex, and apart from such sociological divisions, questions are constantly raised, such as whether a term such as "American black literature" is even meaningful, and whether it is correct from the standpoint of literary criticism to establish the genre of "black literature" in the first place.

The origins of African-American literature date back to a few poems in the mid-18th century, but the first novel was William Wells Brown's Clotel, the President's Daughter (1853). In the 20th century, a small number of professional writers emerged, but in the 1920s, a vigorous literary movement called the Negro Renaissance (Harlem Renaissance) began, centered in Harlem, New York, and this momentum became the basis for the state of affairs after World War II.
