Echigoya, founded by Mitsui Takatoshi in 1673, became the foundation of the Mitsui family's development, but after several organizational changes after the Meiji era, it was renamed Mitsui Gofukuten LLC in 1896. In 1904, it was separated from Mitsui and renamed Mitsukoshi Gofukuten Ltd., becoming Japan's first department store, and since then has promoted the modernization of department stores. It is well known nationwide as a high-end department store, with a total of 18 stores nationwide, including its main store in Nihonbashi, four in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, and Hiroshima. In 2003, the former Mitsukoshi merged with its subsidiaries in Nagoya, Chiba, Kagoshima, and Fukuoka to become the new Mitsukoshi Ltd. In April 2008, it merged with Isetan to establish Mitsukoshi Isetan Holdings.

三井高利が1673年創業した越後屋は三井家発展の基礎となったが，明治以後数次の組織変更ののち，1896年，合名会社三井呉服店と改称。1904年三井から分離，株式会社三越呉服店と改め，日本で最初のデパートとなり，以後近代的百貨店化を進めた。高級百貨店として全国的に知名度が高く，日本橋本店のほか東京４店，横浜，大阪，広島など全国に計18店をもつ。2003年旧三越と名古屋，千葉，鹿児島，福岡の子会社を合併し，新たに〈株式会社三越〉となった。2008年４月伊勢丹との経営統合により三越伊勢丹ホールディングスを設立。
