A literary or intellectual magazine published on a non-commercial basis. Unlike those published by commercial publishers with large circulations, they are characterized by the anonymity of their authors, the experimental and anti-conventional nature of their works, and a disregard for profit. Furthermore, their readership is limited to a relatively small number of intellectuals, and most of them are published for a short period of time. Although they are called "little," they also include those that are large in size and use luxurious paper. The fact that such magazines appeared in large numbers in the early 1910s is not unrelated to the rise of modernist literature at that time. The forerunners of the "little magazine" were The Dial (1840-44) by the American thinker R.W. Emerson, and the British Yellow Book (1894-97), which rebelled against Victorian mores.
