[Died] May 22, 1975.
American historian. His father was German-American. After graduating from the University of Munich, he entered academia, but was pursued by the Nazis in 1933 and moved to the United States in 1937. He worked for the U.S. Army Intelligence during World War II, and after the war he got a job at a government agency, but resigned in 1949 in protest against the Cold War. Since then, he has written books as an independent historian. His main works include Imperialismus vor 1914 (1951) and Why dictators? (54).

アメリカの歴史家。父はドイツ系アメリカ人。ミュンヘン大学卒業後学界に入ったが，1933年ナチスに追われ，37年にアメリカに渡る。第2次世界大戦中アメリカ陸軍情報機関に勤務し，戦後政府機関に就職したが 49年冷戦に反発して下野。以後，在野の歴史家として著作活動に入った。主著『1914年以前の帝国主義』 Imperialismus vor 1914 (1951) ，『独裁者』 Why dictators? (54) がある。
