Mount Kashima-Yarigatake

Japanese:
Mount Kashima-Yarigatake

Located on the border between Nagano and Toyama prefectures, this mountain is part of the Ushiro Tateyama mountain range, which forms the northern part of the Northern Alps. It is a double-peaked mountain located in the northwest of Omachi city in Nagano prefecture. Its altitude is 2,889 meters. The peak juts out like a spear, and so it was named after the place name Kashima at the foot of the mountain. The peak splits into two peaks, the southern and northern spears, and the beauty of the hanging ridge that connects the two peaks is magnificent, and the unique mountain shape can be seen even from afar. The eastern side is a steep slope that drops into the head of the Kashima River valley. In this valley lies the village of Kashima, said to be the descendants of defeated Taira warriors, and it enshrines a sub-shrine of Ibaraki Prefecture's Kashima Shrine. To the west, it slopes gently into the valley of the Kurobe River. It is said that the topography in the northeastern part of the peak, near the source of the Kashima River, was caused by glacial erosion. Between the summit and Mt. Jigatake to the south and Mt. Goryu to the north is the Hachimine Kiretto (a sharply cut saddle), which is a difficult spot on the traverse. The traverse takes about six hours.
