Waga River - Wagakawa

This river flows south through western Iwate Prefecture, then east and empties into the Kitakami River. It is 75.3 km long. It originates at Mt. Waga (1,439 m) in the Mahiru Mountains on the border between Iwate and Akita Prefectures, enters the Waga district of Kitakami City, creates the Ateraku valley, and joins the Kitahonnai River, Shittai River, and Geto River before joining the Kitakami River in the southern part of the city. In 1965, the Yuda Dam and Lake Kinshu were built in the middle reaches of the river for flood control, power generation, and irrigation. The rocky areas of the V-shaped valley upstream are home to char, yamame trout, and other fish.

岩手県西部を南下し、さらに東流して北上川に注ぐ川。延長75.3キロメートル。岩手・秋田県境の真昼(まひる)山地和賀岳（1439メートル）に発し、北上市和賀地区に入って当楽(あてらく)の渓谷をつくり、北本内(きたほんない)川、尻平(しったい)川、夏油(げとう)川をあわせ、市南部で北上川に合流する。1965年（昭和40）中流に洪水調節、発電、灌漑(かんがい)用の湯田ダムと錦秋湖(きんしゅうこ)がつくられた。上流のV字谷の岩場にはイワナ、ヤマメなどが生息する。
