A general term for nematodes of the genus Ditylenchus in the family Tylenchidae that parasitize plant buds, stems, and corms. They are particularly problematic in bulb-producing areas such as tulips, daffodils, and irises. They are thread-like, about 0.6 mm long, and are hermaphroditic. Both larvae and adults are infective. They invade scale tissue and develop as they move. Female adults lay about 200 eggs in the tissue, and the hatched larvae continue to live a parasitic life. When an affected corm is cut into slices, ring-shaped browning along the scales is often found. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
