Bishop of Alexandria. Reigned 444-451. A key figure in the schism of the Monophysites. When Eutyches of Constantinople asserted the Monophysitism of Christ, claiming that the humanity of Christ was different from that of ordinary humans, he supported this. He presided over the so-called Robber Council of Ephesus (449) and condemned the Bishop of Constantinople, Phlabianus (Flavianus), and others as Nestorian heretics. However, he was instead deposed and exiled at the Council of Chalcedon (451).

アレクサンドリア主教。在位444‐451年。単性論派分離の立役者。コンスタンティノープルのエウテュケスがキリストの人性とふつうの人間の人性とは異なるとして，キリスト単性論を主張したとき，これを支持し，エフェソスのいわゆる〈盗賊教会会議〉(449)を主宰して，コンスタンティノープル主教フラビアノスPhlabianos(フラウィアヌスFlavianus)その他をネストリウス的異端として弾劾した。しかしカルケドン公会議(451)で逆に罷免され，追放された。
