"Rakubanashi Laughing Furin" - Otobanawarai Laughing Hayashi

…[Shimomura Nobuhiro] When Dokan went falconry and got caught in the rain and tried to borrow a raincoat, a young woman offered him a mountain bush clover. He realized that this was the meaning of an old poem (Miscellaneous in Goshuishu), "Seven-layered, eight-layered flowers bloom, but there is not even one mountain bush clover, how sad," and felt ashamed of his ignorance. This anecdote is well-known and is recorded in works such as "Jozan Kidan" (written by Yuasa Jozan, written around Genbun-Meiwa) and "Amechu Mondo" (written by Nishimura Toori, 1778). The original form of the rakugo story "Dokan" that is passed down today was created in "Otosibanashi Warau Hayashi" (written by Hayashiya Shozo I), published in 1833 (Tenpo 4), by parodying this story. The kabuki play Utano Tokumegumi no Yamabuki (written by Kawatake Mokuami) premiered at the Shintomiza Theater in Tokyo in March 1887, dramatizing this oral tradition, with the lowly woman Omura playing Nadeshiko, the daughter of the Toshima family, who was destroyed by Dokan, and who attacks both her father's enemy and Dokan.
