The aluminum industry can be broadly divided into smelting, rolling, and product processing, but while the major aluminum companies are engaged in integrated production (vertical integration), Japan has not achieved vertical integration due to the historical background that processing companies, smelting companies, and rolling companies developed separately, and aluminum companies other than Nippon Light Metals specialize in one of these business types. In addition, Japan's aluminum smelting industry has relied on oil-fired power generation in particular for smelting energy, and the two oil crises in 1973 and 1979 caused the rise in electricity costs, making it impossible for domestic smelters to compete with low-cost imported bullion, and the industry lost its international competitiveness.
