Fujiwara Sayo - Fujiwara no Sukeyo

Japanese: 藤原佐世 - ふじわらのすけよ
Fujiwara Sayo - Fujiwara no Sukeyo

A Chinese scholar in the early Heian period. He was the great-grandson of Tanetsugu of the Shiki family, and his father was Sugawara no Koreyoshi (Jiji Fifth Rank). He studied under Sugawara no Koreyoshi (Michizane's father). In 872 (Jogan 14), Sayo, who was a Tokugyosho Echizen Daijo (a person who had mastered writing), was sent to Korokan to entertain envoys from Bohai. In 879 (Gangei 3), he became the capital lecturer of Emperor Yozei, and in 884, the head of the university. He also became the head of the household of Fujiwara no Mototsune, and served as Mototsune's jidoku (a priest). In 887 (Ninna 3), when Emperor Uda ascended to the throne, the Ako Incident occurred, but it was Sase who raised the issue of the meaning of Ako, and used Mototsune out of a sense of rivalry with Tachibana no Hiromi, who drafted the imperial reply. In 891 (Kanpei 3), he was made Mutsu no Kami and moved to Oshu, and in 897, he was appointed Udaiben and died on the way back from Oshu to Kyoto. Junior Fourth Rank. "Catalogue of Books Found in Japan" was compiled by Sase at imperial command.
