Granada's old town in the Andalusia region in southern Spain. It faces the Alhambra across the Darro River that runs through the city. It is the oldest district in Granada, where Arabs who arrived here first built a fort in the 13th century. Its steep, narrow, maze-like streets stretch out toward the Albaicín hill, and are surrounded by a cluster of white-walled houses painted with Arabic plaster. It well represents the characteristics of an Islamic city, and in 1984 it was registered as a World Heritage Site along with the Alhambra and Generalife.
