An ancient Roman city founded after the destruction of Jerusalem. The Jews of Jerusalem rebelled against Rome in 66, but were suppressed by the Roman army in 70 and the city was completely destroyed. Later, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (reigned 117-138), another Jewish revolt broke out (132), so the emperor completely destroyed Jerusalem, removed all Jewish material, and built a new city in its place, giving it the Roman name Aelia Capitolina. The new city became a Roman colony (colonia), and all Jews were forbidden from entering it. The name remained until Rome officially recognized Christianity in the 4th century.
