Algiers Agreement

...Meanwhile, in Iran, a non-Arab country, domestic separatist forces took advantage of the chaos of the Islamic Revolution to become more active, and tensions were rising as the revolutionary government felt Iraq was interfering behind the scenes. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein abrogated the Algiers Agreement (1975) that had been concluded between the two countries and launched attacks on Iran from land and air. His aim was to regain sovereignty over the Shatt al-Arab River, which he had lost under the Algiers Agreement, and to expand his voice in the Arab world, anticipating the isolation of Iran, which had lost the backing of a superpower following the severance of diplomatic relations with the United States (April 1980).
