Gemini (the twins)

Japanese: ふたご座(双子座) - ふたござ（英語表記）Gemini

Its abbreviation is Gem. It is one of the zodiacal constellations. It is located northeast of Orion, where the summer solstice is currently located. The pair of stars that stretch from alpha Castor and beta Pollux toward the Milky Way depict the heroic twin brothers Castor and Pollux in Greek mythology. Alpha Castor has a luminosity of 1.6 and is an A-type double star, forming a binary system with an orbital period of 340 years. Moreover, Castor A is a spectroscopic binary with a period of 9.2 days and Castor B is a spectroscopic binary with a period of 2.9 days, and the nearby Castor C is also a spectroscopic binary with a period of 0.8 days, which is also called the red dwarf variable star YYGem, and the Castor stars as a whole form a sextuplet star.

略号はGem。黄道星座の一つ。オリオン座の北東に位置し，現在夏至点がある。α星カストル，β星ポルックスから天の川にむかってつづく1対の星列は，ギリシア神話のふたご兄弟の英雄カストルとポリュデウケスの姿を描く。α星カストルは光度1.6等，ともにA型星の二重星で，公転周期340年の連星系である。しかもカストルA星は周期9.2日，カストルB星は周期2.9日の分光連星で，しかもこれに近接したカストルCも周期0.8日の分光連星であり，これはまた赤色矮星（わいせい）の変光星YYGemと呼ばれ，カストル星全体では六重星となる。
