Among the action films from the Middle Ages to the early modern period in the West, categorized as "swashbucklers," these films are set at sea and feature pirates or those who fight against them, with spectacular scenes such as shipboard sword fights. They were produced in large numbers from the 1930s to the 1950s, along with the other genre of swashbuckler films, chivalry films. Stars of pirate films include Errol Flynn (Pirates of the Caribbean, 1935; The Sea Hawk, 1940; Under All Flags, 1952), Tyrone Power (Conqueror of the Sea, 1942), Paul Henreid (The Pirate Barracuda, 1945), and Louis Hayward (Tiger of the Mediterranean, 1949; Pirate Captain, 1952), but "modern drama" stars such as Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, and Richard Widmark also appeared in pirate films.
