Kamiura

Japanese: 上浦 - かみうら
Kamiura
This is the former town area in the northeast of Saiki City, in the southeast of Oita Prefecture. It is located on the north shore of Saiki Bay. In 1950, it was renamed Higashikamiura Village to Kamiura Village, and in 1951, it was incorporated as a town. In 2005, it was merged with Saiki City, Ume Town, Kamame Town, Tsurumi Town, Yayoi Town, Honjo Village, Naokawa Village, and Yomizu Village to form Saiki City. The mountains run close to the coast, and the plains are narrow, so citrus fruits are cultivated in terraced fields and livestock are raised. In 1964, the Seto Inland Sea Aquaculture Center (→ Fisheries Research Center) was established, and in 1969, the Prefectural Fisheries Experimental Station was established, and the shift to aquaculture has been promoted. There are many scenic spots such as swimming beaches and Gyouran Falls, and the entire coastal area belongs to the Nippori Coast Quasi-National Park, and most of the remaining town area belongs to the Bungo Channel Prefectural Natural Park.

In the southern Seto no Mukounji Temple, there is a sweet potato Jizo that enshrines Asami Kichijuro, who is said to have introduced sweet potatoes from Satsuma in 1711 and saved many lives from the great famine of 1732.
