The Aztecs conquered the surrounding tribes, developed into a great empire that collected tribute from 371 subordinate cities, and built the magnificent city of Tenochtitlan on an island on Lake Texcoco in the mid-14th century. Several embankments were built across the lake to connect the island to the lakeshore, and a great pyramid, the stage for the theocracy, rose in the central square.
