C 15 H 21 N 3 O 2 . Also called eserine. An alkaloid found in the seeds of Calabar bean, a creeping herb of the legume family native to West Africa. It is obtained as columnar or plate-shaped crystals from ether or benzyl. It forms salts with benzoic acid, citric acid, salicylic acid, hydrobromic acid, hydrochloric acid, picric acid, etc. When exposed to sunlight, its aqueous or alcoholic solution turns from red to brown. It inhibits acetylcholinesterase and has a parasympathetic stimulant effect. Its action is roughly equivalent to that of neostigmine. It is used as a miotic and glaucoma treatment.
