Born: July 6, 1936 in Nagoya, Aichi [Died] May 19, 2010. Artist, New York, New York. One of the pioneers of conceptual art. Enrolled in Musashino Art School in 1956, then dropped out. Exhibited at the Yomiuri Independent Exhibition from 1957 to 1961. In 1960, he participated in the formation of the Neo-Dadaism Organizers (→Dada), and produced a three-dimensional work in which an eerie-shaped block of cement was placed inside a coffin-shaped wooden box. In 1961, he traveled to the United States, where he met Marcel Duchamp through Shuzo Takiguchi, and continued his work based in New York. Around 1964, he shifted to diagrammatic paintings, depicting symbols, words, numbers, etc. on the canvas. His "Diagram" and "Mechanism of Meaning" series attracted attention, and his solo exhibitions were held in the United States, Italy, Germany, Japan, France, and other countries, where he was highly praised. He began producing experimental architectural models around 1972, and his unique works, such as the garden "Yoro Tenjinhan Chi" (1995) and the apartment complex "Tenjinhan Jutaku Mitaka" (2005), attracted much attention. His wife, the poet Madeline Gins, was also his business partner, and they co-authored "The Mechanism of Meaning" (1971). He was awarded the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by France in 1986, and the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2003.
