Music that anyone can casually listen to without any prior knowledge. Around 1970, music that was once called mood music began to be called easy listening music, following the name given by music industry papers in the United States. The background to this was the fact that music was now commonly played over speakers in stations and department stores as "background music," and that research was being done into the positive effects that background music has on work efficiency in workplaces where simple labor is performed, and there was a social movement to use music from an ergonomic perspective.
