...However, historically, the distinction between the two did not exist until relatively recently. A good example is the title of a book written by B. Kidd, a representative social Darwinist, called "Social Darwinism" (1894). Social Darwinism, including social evolution, began to appear in large numbers around the 1870s, after the direct ripples of the publication of Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" had run their course, and was very popular until around World War I.
