Tar sand

…Oil sands, also called tar sands, are sand or sandstone containing heavy oil that cannot be extracted by conventional crude oil extraction, i.e., by flow extraction. Similar high-viscosity heavy oils are sometimes called heavy oils, but these have specific gravity of API 10-20° and viscosity of 100-10,000 cp, whereas oil sands are heavier and more viscous than bitumen (as defined by the 1982 UNITAR Conference).
