A marine fish of the order Scorpaeniformes and family Scorpaenidae of the class Osteichthyes. It is found throughout Japan south of Chiba and Niigata prefectures, as well as in the East China Sea, the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, and the coastal waters of Hong Kong. It reaches a total length of 25 centimeters. At first glance it resembles a rockfish, but it can be distinguished by the presence of a spine on the lower edge of the eye socket, the usual 17 pectoral fin rays, and yellowish worm-eaten spots on the sides of its body. It lives in rocky areas at depths of 30 to 100 meters and is caught by longline and fishing. It produces larvae in early spring. It is boiled, grilled with salt, teriyaki, and fried, but the taste is inferior to that of a rockfish.
