Kanae Yamamoto

Western-style painter and printmaker. Born in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture. Moved to Tokyo at a young age and became an apprentice to woodblock artist Sakurai Gyoun. Graduated from the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1906 (Meiji 39), and founded the magazine "Hosun" with his comrades the following year in 1907, publishing prints and writings in it. He lived in France from 1912 to 1916 (Taisho 5), and returned to Japan after a stint in Moscow. The following year, in 1917, he became a member of the Western Painting Department of the Japan Art Academy, and in 1918 founded the Japan Creative Print Association with his comrades, and was also actively involved in free painting education and the peasant art movement. In 1922, he participated in the founding of the Shunyo-kai, and the following year in 1923, built the Japan Peasant Art Research Institute in Oya, Nagano Prefecture. Known for his profound realism, he is the author of books such as "How to Paint Oil Paintings" and "Free Painting Education." His representative works include the oil painting "Sagna," and the woodblock prints "Children by the Sea" and "Bretonne."

Japanese:

洋画家、版画家。愛知県岡崎生まれ。幼少のころ上京、木版師桜井暁雲(ぎょううん)の内弟子となる。1906年(明治39)東京美術学校西洋画科を卒業し、翌1907年同志と『方寸』誌を創刊、これに版画や文章を発表。1912~1916年(大正5)滞仏し、モスクワ滞在ののち帰国。翌1917年日本美術院洋画部同人となり、1918年同志と日本創作版画協会を創立、また自由画教育と農民美術運動に積極的に取り組む。1922年春陽会の創立に参加、翌1923年長野県大屋に日本農民美術研究所を建設する。重厚な写実で知られ、著書『油絵の描き方』『自由画教育』などもある。代表作は油絵の『サーニャ』、木版画の『海辺の子供』『ブルトンヌ』ほか。
