Peirce, B.

…American natural scientist, logician, and philosopher. He was the founder of pragmatism and one of the founders of modern semiotics (the general theory of signs). He is also one of the pioneers of the modern development of symbolic logic, mathematical foundations, and scientific methodology, and has been called "the most versatile, profound, and original philosopher the United States has ever produced." Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he received special home education under his father, Benjamin P. Peirce (1809-80, professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Harvard University and the greatest mathematician in America at the time), and studied at Harvard University. …
