A city in central Egypt and the capital of the prefecture of the same name. Population 179,000 (1992). In Arabic, it is called Banī Suwayf. There are no records from ancient Egypt, but in the Coptic period it was called Takhona or Daknash. It is close to the grain-producing region of Faiyum, and during the Muhammad Ali dynasty in the 19th century it began to function as a transit point for agricultural products. Even today, it is a bustling center of commercial and river traffic on the Nile. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
