Brief Encounter

British film. 1945. Directed by David Lean. The story of a fleeting love affair between a married doctor (Trevor Howard, 1913-1988) and a married woman (Celia Johnson, 1908-1982) is heartfelt, with the woman's monologue narrating. The film is based on Noel Coward's one-act play Still Life, set only in a train station waiting room. A man and a woman who meet by chance in a train station waiting room fall deeply in love as they meet, but they part ways without crossing the line due to their responsibilities to their families and their good sense. The cinematography by Robert Krasker (1913-1981), which emphasizes the contrast between light and dark, and the background music using Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 add excitement to this British story of adult love. This is a masterpiece rich in emotion, making full use of cinematic effects, including a clever plot that begins with a flashback immediately after the climax. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

イギリス映画。1945年作品。デビッド・リーン監督。妻子ある医師（トレバー・ハワードTrevor Howard、1913―1988）と人妻（シリア・ジョンソンCelia Johnson、1908―1982）のつかのまの恋が、女性の独白をナレーションに切々と語られる。原作は駅の待合室のみを舞台にしたノエル・カワードの一幕ものの戯曲「静物画」。駅の待合室でふとしたことから知り合った男女は、出会いを重ねるなか、深い愛情を抱き合うようになるが、それぞれの家族に対する責任と良識の前に一線を越えることなく別れていく。明暗のコントラストを強調したロバート・クラスカーRobert Krasker（1913―1981）の撮影、ラフマニノフのピアノ協奏曲第2番を用いた背景音楽がイギリス的な大人の恋の物語を盛り上げる。クライマックス直後からの回想によって語り起こす巧妙なプロットをはじめ、映画的演出効果を駆使した情感豊かな名作。カンヌ国際映画祭審査員特別賞受賞。
