The history of securities trading is as old as the public bond system, and can be traced back to 16th century Europe. The most notable of these is the Amsterdam Stock Exchange (opened in 1530). Located at the financial center of European commerce, this exchange was not only a market for buying and selling currencies and foreign exchange, but also a market for issuing public bonds where governments raised financial funds.
