Amis tribe

...the indigenous tribes of Taiwan Province, China. Those who had been converted to Han Chinese were called "mature barbarians" (jiyukuban), and those who had not were called "raw barbarians" (seiban). This designation dates back to the Qing Dynasty, prior to Japan's occupation of Taiwan (1895-1945). For example, the Miao (Miao) people, a minority group on the mainland, were divided into "mature" and "raw barbarians" depending on their degree of Han Chinese conversion. However, since "barbarian" carries a contemptuous connotation, the designation "raw barbarians" was changed to "Takasago tribe" in the middle of the Japanese occupation, and this designation came to be used in official documents, etc.
