① Boss : Similar to stock, an intrusive rock body with a horizontal cross section that is nearly circular [Hatch: 1888]. The French word bose means a hump or a mound. ② stock : A small bottomless intrusive body that is roughly cylindrical and relatively large, but smaller than a batholume. Most are irregular in shape, with branches branching off from the batholume and the top of the batholume protruding. The sides are steeply sloping and the body spreads downward [Katayama et al.: 1970]. Daily limited his study to small batholumes exposed at an area of less than 200 km2 [Watanabe, ed.: 1935]. The name comes from the German word Stockwerk, meaning floor or storey of a house, and was used in Saxon tin mines, where igneous rock disseminated with cassiterite was mined horizontally, resembling the storeys of a building.
