…A revolt by Cossacks, non-Russian natives, and Russian peasants in Russia in 1773-75. The leader, Emel'yan Ivanovich Pugachyov (1740 or 42-75), was a member of the lower ranks of the Cossacks in the Don River basin. He served in several wars and became an officer, but fled to the Caucasus in late 1771 in search of freedom, and thereafter went into hiding, was arrested, deserted, and wandered about. In August 1773, he appeared among the Yaik Cossacks, and conspired with former participants in the Yaik revolt that had been suppressed the previous year to claim to be Tsar Peter III of Russia.
