Psychopharmacology - Psychopharmacology

Psychotropic drugs are drugs whose main function is to affect mental functions (antipsychotics, antidepressants, anxiolytics, psychotropic drugs, etc.), and the field that studies the mechanism of action and medical applications of psychotropic drugs is called psychopharmacology. It differs from general pharmacology in that it uses methodologies from psychology, ethology, and psychiatry to deal with animal behavior and human mental phenomena. Since some of its fields overlap with neuropharmacology, the two are collectively called neuropsychopharmacology.

精神機能に影響を与えることをおもな作用とする薬物（抗精神病薬、抗うつ薬、抗不安薬、精神異常発現薬など）を向精神薬とよぶが、この向精神薬を対象として、その作用機序や医療への応用などを研究する学問を精神薬理学という。動物の行動や人間の精神現象を取り扱うため、心理学や行動学、精神科学などの方法論を用いる点が、一般の薬理学と異なる特徴である。なお、一部は神経薬理学の領域と重なるところから、両者をあわせて神経精神薬理学ともいう。
