Tropical Night - Nettaiya

It refers to a day when the nighttime minimum temperature is 25°C or higher. In statistics, it is often substituted by the minimum temperature of the day, not just the nighttime temperature. There is almost no difference between the two, but sometimes the number of days when the daily minimum temperature is used can be about 10% higher. A day when the daily maximum temperature is 30°C or higher is called a midsummer day, and a day when it is 35°C or higher is called a scorching hot day. Tropical nights are hot and uncomfortable to sleep on, so they are an indicator of the heat. The average number of tropical nights in Japan is 90 days per year in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, 23 days in Tokyo, and 1 day in Sendai City. The number of tropical nights is increasing nationwide every year, and the increase is particularly noticeable in large cities due to the heat island effect.

夜間の最低気温が25℃以上の日をいう。統計上は夜間だけでなく、その日の最低気温をもって代用することが多い。両者はほとんど差がないが、ときとして日最低気温を用いた場合の日数のほうが1割くらい多くなることがある。なお、日最高気温が30℃以上の日を真夏日、35℃以上の日を猛暑日という。熱帯夜は暑く寝苦しいので、暑さを示す指標となる。日本での熱帯夜の平均値は、年間で、沖縄県那覇(なは)市で90日、東京で23日、仙台市では1日である。熱帯夜は全国的に年とともに増加傾向にあり、とくに大都市ではヒートアイランド現象の影響で熱帯夜の増加が著しい。
