Pilea - Pirea

A general term for the genus Pilea in the Urticaceae family (APG classification: Urticaceae). They are annual or perennial plants, rarely shrubby. There are about 400 species distributed from the tropics to temperate zones. P. cadierei Gagnep. et Guillaumin is a semi-shrubby herb native to Vietnam. The leaves are succulent and shiny with silvery white spots. It tolerates poor light well, and there are small species. P. nummulariifolia (Sw.) Wedd. is a creeping perennial native to Central and South America, also known as creeping charlie. It branches well and grows long, making it suitable for hanging pots. P. mollis Wedd. cv. Moon valley is native to Costa Rica. The leaves are crepe-like, ovate, yellow-green with dark brown veins. Other species cultivated include P. serpyllifolia (Poir.) Wedd. and P. microphylla (L.) Liebm. They are used as miniature ornamental plants and propagated by cuttings.

イラクサ科（APG分類：イラクサ科）ピレア属の総称。一年草または多年草で、まれに低木状をなす。熱帯から温帯に約400種分布する。アサバソウP. cadierei Gagnep. et Guillauminはベトナム原産の半低木状草本。葉は多汁質で光沢があり、銀白色の斑(ふ)がある。日照不足にもよく耐え、小形種もある。ヌンムラリイフォリアP. nummulariifolia (Sw.) Wedd.は中南米原産の匍匐(ほふく)性多年草で、クリーピング・チャーリーcreeping charlieともいう。よく分枝して長く伸びるので、吊(つ)り鉢に向く。モリス・ムーンバレーP. mollis Wedd. cv. Moon valleyはコスタリカ原産。葉は縮緬(ちりめん)状の卵形、黄緑色で暗褐色の葉脈がある。ほかにメキシコミズP. serpyllifolia (Poir.) Wedd.やコメバコケミズP. microphylla (L.) Liebm.が栽培される。ミニ観葉種として利用し、繁殖は挿木による。
