Boers (also called Boers). White people of Dutch descent in South Africa. They make up about 60% of the country's white population of 5.17 million (1994). They speak Afrikaans. Dutch colonists and their descendants formed the Cape Colony in the mid-17th century. Later, disliking British rule, they moved inland (the Great Trek) and established the Orange Free State, the Transvaal Republic, and the Natal Republic, but were defeated by British colonists in the Boer War. They form the basis of the National Party. Many are followers of the Dutch Reformed Church. → Related articles Apartheid | Orange Free State | De Klerk | South Africa Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
