Sioux City

Japanese: スー･シティ（英語表記）Sioux City

A city in the western tip of Iowa, USA. Population 83,000 (1994). Located where the Big Sioux River joins the Missouri River, the city was named after the Sioux Indians. J.K. Cook explored and founded the town in 1854, and it became a base for fur traders. The population increased with the arrival of steamships and railroads in the late 1960s, as well as the discovery of gold in the Black Hills. It is a center of wholesale trade, livestock and meat processing, and railroad traffic in the region that spans Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska, and is also known for being one of the world's leading dairy factories, a large grain market, and honey shipments.

アメリカ合衆国アイオワ州西端部の都市。人口8万3000(1994)。ビッグ･スー川がミズーリ川に合流する地点に立地し，市名はスー･インディアンにちなむ。1854年にJ.K.クックが探検して町を建設，毛皮商人の基地となったが，60年代後半の蒸気船の溯航および鉄道の開通，さらにブラック･ヒルズにおける金鉱の発見によって人口が増加した。アイオワ，サウス･ダコタ，ネブラスカ各州にまたがる地域の卸売業，牧畜･食肉加工業，鉄道交通の中心地で，世界有数の酪製品工場，大穀物市場，はちみつの出荷でも知られる。
