African shield

A region of Precambrian rocks widely distributed across the African continent. Precambrian rocks make up about 57% of the African continent and have been the subject of five mountain building events: over 3 billion years ago, 2.7 to 2.3 billion years ago, 2.2 to 1.7 billion years ago, 1.3 to 900 million years ago, and 600 to 500 million years ago. In a broad sense, it refers to the areas that became stable land masses as a result of these events, but in a narrow sense, it refers to the four stable land masses of West Africa, Congo, Kalahari, and Tanzania, excluding the areas that underwent mountain building events between 1.3 and 900 million years ago.
