Shin Chae-ho

Japanese: 申采浩 - しんさいこう

A Korean independence activist and historian who established the theory of "ethnic historiography." His pen name was Danjae. He was born in South Chungcheong Province. As editor-in-chief of the Daehan Maeil Shinbo, he advocated for anti-Japanese and national enlightenment, and worked for patriotic enlightenment, and also joined the national movement group Shinminhoe. After Japan's annexation of Korea (1910), he defected to China. In 1919, he joined the government in exile "Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea," which was organized in Shanghai by Korean independence activists, but later withdrew. In 1923, he wrote the "Declaration of the Korean Revolution." In 1928, he was arrested by Japanese police in Taiwan, and died in prison in Port Arthur Prison in 1936. His works as a historian include "Ancient History of Korea" (1931).

朝鮮の独立運動家，〈民族史学〉を樹立した歴史家。号は丹斎。忠清南道生れ。反日・国民啓蒙の論陣を張った《大韓毎日申報》主筆として愛国啓蒙運動に努め，民族運動団体〈新民会〉にも加入。日韓併合（1910年）後中国に亡命。1919年朝鮮人独立運動家たちが上海で組織した亡命政府〈大韓民国臨時政府〉に参加，のち脱退。1923年〈朝鮮革命宣言〉を執筆。1928年台湾で日本警察に逮捕され，1936年旅順刑務所で獄死。歴史家としての著書に《朝鮮上古史》（1931年）など。
