A Korean independence activist and historian who established the theory of "ethnic historiography." His pen name was Danjae. He was born in South Chungcheong Province. As editor-in-chief of the Daehan Maeil Shinbo, he advocated for anti-Japanese and national enlightenment, and worked for patriotic enlightenment, and also joined the national movement group Shinminhoe. After Japan's annexation of Korea (1910), he defected to China. In 1919, he joined the government in exile "Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea," which was organized in Shanghai by Korean independence activists, but later withdrew. In 1923, he wrote the "Declaration of the Korean Revolution." In 1928, he was arrested by Japanese police in Taiwan, and died in prison in Port Arthur Prison in 1936.
