…When he was defeated and killed in 1510, Babur took Samarkand for a time, but after regaining control (1512), Abu al-Khail's descendants succeeded him as Khan, with either Samarkand or Bukhara as the capital. This dynasty had a strong tendency toward decentralization, since it divided the occupied territories among the clan's nobles. However, 'Abd Allāh Khān (reigned 1583-98) held real power since the reign of his father Iskandar (1561-83), and defeated domestic rivals to strengthen the Khan's power. He also expanded his territory through active foreign campaigns, established a monetary system, and launched public works to improve domestic affairs. …
