Ittetsu Inaba

Japanese: 稲葉一鉄 - いなばいってつ
Ittetsu Inaba

A military commander during the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. One of the Mino Sanninshu. His childhood name was Hikoroku. He changed his name to Michimochi, Michitomo, Sadamichi, Nagamichi, and Yoshimichi. He was called Ukyonosuke and Iyo no Kami, and became a monk under the name Ittetsu. In 1525 (5th year of the Taiei period), he repelled the attack of the Azai clan of Omi, and after his father and five elder brothers were killed in battle, he returned to secular life and succeeded the family. He served the Toki clan and Saito Dosan, but came into conflict with his son Tatsuoki. During Oda Nobunaga's invasion of Mino, he conspired with Ujiie Bokuzen and Ando Morinari, two of the Three Brothers, and colluded with them. He later served Nobunaga, and made Sone (Sone, Ogaki City), Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture), his castle, and achieved success after the Battle of Anegawa. After the Honnoji Incident, he hurried back to Japan and posted a notice at a shrine or temple, which led to suspicion from Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi. There is also an anecdote that he cleared Nobunaga's suspicions by proclaiming his innocence in the calligraphy of a kido in a tea room. He died in Kiyomizu Castle. He was buried at Gekkei-in Temple in Nagara, Mino Ono District (Ibigawa Town, Ibi District).
