Also known as the Muricidae (illustration), this is a large gastropod shell with many spines growing on its shell like fish bones. The shell is 17 cm high and 5 cm thick excluding the spines, and is egg-cone shaped, with a long, thin water tube extending downward. It is pale yellow in color, with thin ribs that are dark brown with horizontal stripes. In addition, thick ribs form every 120 degrees, dividing the shell into thirds, and spines form on top of these, with the one on the shoulder being particularly long. The shell opening is oval, and there are five to six long spines on the outer edge. The long water tube also has seven long spines, with shorter spines between them.

アッキガイともいう（イラスト）。殻に多くのとげが魚の骨のように生えたアクキガイ科の大型巻貝。殻の高さ17cm，とげを除いた太さ5cmの卵円錐形で下方へ細く長い水管嘴（すいかんし）が伸びる。淡黄色で，細い肋（ろく）は濃褐色で横縞になる。また殻を三分するように120度ごとに太い肋ができ，その上にとげができるが，肩のはとくに長い。殻口は卵円形で，その外縁にも長いとげが5～6本できる。長い水管嘴にも7本の長いとげがあり，その間に短いとげがある。
