A large-scale low pressure system that exists almost all year round between Iceland and Greenland in the subpolar low pressure zone of the Northern Hemisphere. It is most developed in winter, covering northern Europe, northern Canada, and parts of the Arctic Ocean. In summer, it retreats and moves south due to the development of a fairly wide high pressure area in the central Arctic Ocean. This low pressure system affects the weather throughout the Northern Hemisphere. In particular, in winter, a group of low pressure systems moving from North America and the western North Atlantic to Europe is most dominant south of Iceland, bringing wind and rain to northern and central Europe. In summer, they are weaker and less frequent than in winter.
