A bay on the southeast coast of Cuba that opens into the Windward Strait in the Caribbean Sea. The mouth of the bay is 6 km wide and 20 km deep, making it a good port where large ships can anchor. The surrounding southern area of 116 km2 was leased to the United States for 99 years under a 1903 treaty, and is used as a US naval base. Despite the Castro regime's demand for return after the revolution, it continues to be used by the US military. The ports of Caimanera on the west coast near the mouth of the bay and Boquerón on the east coast are connected by rail and road to Guantanamo, 20 km north.
