The upstream sector is the industry that explores for and develops crude oil, as well as extracting, transporting, refining, and supplying petroleum products to consumers. In particular, exploration, development, extraction, and transportation are sometimes called the upstream sector, while refining is called the downstream sector.

The origins of the global petroleum industry date back to 1859, when oil company engineer Edwin Laurentine Drake (1819-1880) succeeded in producing petroleum by drilling a well in Titusville, Pennsylvania, USA.
