...The new constitution was approved in a national referendum on September 28th with the support of 79% of the total votes, and was promulgated on October 4th. In the parliamentary elections held in November, the newly formed Union for a New Republic (UNR), which supported de Gaulle, advanced to become the largest party, and de Gaulle was elected president (December 21st) with enhanced powers based on the constitution, thus establishing a system that was called "de Gaulle's Republic." This system replaced the traditional political party-centered management of the parliament with a system that strengthened the leadership of the government centered on the president, and de Gaulle often used a direct referendum to ask for the trust of the people when making important policy decisions.
