〘名〙① 遠見番がつめて見張りをする場所。※新田老談記(17C中‐後か)中「其上足利遠見番所の早鐘の音けはしく相聞候」② 江戸時代、異国船渡来を監視し警備態勢を固めるため、沿岸各地の見晴らしのよい場所に設けた番所。寛永一五年(一六三八)、幕府が長崎半島の先端部の野母村(長崎市野母町)の日ノ山(権現山)に設けて、異国船が百浬内外まで進入すると、直ちに長崎に合図で通報させたのが初まり。台場。※俳諧・江戸新八百韻(1756)「蛎は真水に塩の八百会〈米仲〉 渚より遠見番所の灯も暮て〈龍眠〉」
