1768‐1817 Leader of the First Serbian Uprising (1804-13) against the Ottoman Empire. Born in a small village in Serbia. During the Austro-Turkish War (1788-91), he joined the Austrian volunteer army and gained military experience. After the war, he returned to Topola near his hometown and briefly worked with the hajduks (bandits) who continued their guerilla struggle against the Turks in the mountains. He then began trading livestock and made a fortune as a pig merchant. When preparations for an uprising against the tyranny of the Ottoman Janissaries (regular troops) were underway, he joined and was elected leader.
